Eilean Donan, Scotland
Eilean Donan, or the island of Donan, is perhaps one of the most well-known medieval castles in the Western Highlands of Scotland. Beyond its popularity, Eilean Donan is incredible.
No wonder it’s the inspiration for Merida’s home.
But before it made it to Hollywood, Eilean Dona had a long history that dates back to the 6th century. Historians believe the fortress was named after Irish Saint, Bishop Donan, who came to Scotland around 580 AD. There are several churches dedicated to the Saint, so it’s possible this may be a cell or community he created at the time.
