Families were separated as “essential workers” were required to stay behind to help with the cleanup efforts.

Over a thousand busses were dispatched to transport evacuees away from Pripyat. Their clothes were taken and destroyed. Their hair was cut short. They were given boiler suits and slippers to wear and offered temporary housing outside Kyiv.
