At 1:23 A.M. on April 26, 1986, reactor number four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station exploded, forever altering the future of Pripyat. 

Nikolai Syomin, who spoke with The Guardian for the disaster’s 30th anniversary, recalls attending a party near the center of town in an apartment with the windows open because it was a warm night. Unbeknownst to attendees, the wind was blowing smoke and radioactive dust from Chernobyl.
