What Is the Keto Diet?
The ketogenic diet (or keto diet, for short) is a low-carb, high-fat diet that offers many health benefits. Many studies show that this type of diet can help you lose weight and improve your health. According to Healthline, “Ketogenic diets may even have benefits against diabetes, cancer, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease.”
That said, this weight loss diet isn’t a silver bullet. You should consult with your doctor prior to taking it on, and understand that it requires a lifestyle change. If you do keto, lose weight, then go back to your old eating and exercising (or lack thereof) the weight will come back.
Why Does Diet Matter?
There’s a misconception that if you work out you can eat whatever you want. However, it’s what you eat that makes a difference. Consuming highly processed foods that contribute to the so-called “sugar habit” often leave people feeling physically bad and not losing weight — and feeling emotionally bad because they think they have “failed.”
Other non-processed food also plays a role. A study from the National Institutes of Health found on average that a very-low carbohydrate diet resulted in 3,137 daily calories burned. “That was 200 more daily calories burned than the low-glycemic diet (2,937) and 325 more than the low-fat diet (2,812). Hormone levels and other metabolic measures also varied by diet.”
So, low carbs do help. But so does exercise, so don’t think you can just eat your way to thin — you need to get off the couch and do some walking or working out as well.
