18. Hobbiton USA
A roadside attraction in northern California, Hobbiton USA was a short nature walk where visitors could see the story of J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit as depicted by dioramas and concrete statues. The attraction was opened in the 1970s, at a time when Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series was experiencing a rise in popularity. Guests could see beloved characters like Gandalf, Bilbo, Aragorn, and Gollum represented as hand-made sculptures in a picturesque nature setting.
Hobbiton closed down in 2009, and in the ensuing years nature has largely reclaimed the area. However, explorers can still find the remains of Gandalf’s statue as well as Bilbo’s home hidden deep beneath the brush.
