Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird by Frida Kahlo (1940)
These next two paintings pay homage to Mexican painter and portraitist, Frida Kahlo. Famous for her self-portraits that reflect her home country’s natural artifacts and culture, Kahlo explores her identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race.
Her art can be described as surrealist and magical realist because of her combination of magical elements with the ordinary.
Like most of her other paintings, Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird contains symbolic creatures, large green leaves, and her poised face at the forefront of the artwork.
