Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe by Van Gogh (1889)
Vincent Van Gogh’s art has garnered more popularity as time goes on. Beyond the image of a tortured artist, his fame comes from his life and, well, his ear. In this self-portrait, Van Gogh paints himself earless.
In 1888, Vincent fell into madness and eventually cut his ear off. When the police arrived at the scene, there was blood everywhere. Apparently, after attempting to have a home where artists could be creative together and finding a fellow artist to live with him, Van Gogh began to unravel.
